Scope note
Refers to watermarks that are translucent and thus lighter than the surrounding area on the sheet. Its effect is the result of a wire design laid over and sewn onto the sheet mold wire (for handmade paper) or attached to the dandy roll (for machine-made paper). The design presses against the surface of the paper and displaces fibers to make the watermark. It is a more common type of watermark.
